My Family History - Wenzel, my mother's mother's family.
My grandmother, Emma Wenzel, was born in New York City in 1897 of German/Austrian immigrant parents. Her father was Theodore Wenzel and he came to the US in about 1888 from Austria (though sometimes it is listed as Germany). This is perhaps not surprising as borders between Austria and Germany changed a bit over the years. His wife, Martha Zückler, came to the US in 1891 from the town of Schlettau, Saxony, Germany. In addition to Emma, they had Elizabeth (born in 1892), Frank (born in 1893) and Alma (born in 1896). The Wenzel children are in the photo - below right. Emma and Alma are in the car photo with a friend. They mainly lived in Brooklyn but Theodore and Martha purchased a summer property in Patchogue on Long Island in the 1920s and part of this property was passed down to my mother in the 1970s. The brownstone they owned in Brooklyn also came to my mother (both through her aunt Alma) but it was sold long before it became valuable.
