40

I remember.

I remember the first steps on the moon,

I remember my brother's first steps.

I cheered when Nixon fell,

and was amazed when the Mets won.

I went to the world's fair in New York

and talked on a picture phone to my mom.

I watched the evening news

and didn't fully understand what the body counts meant.

When I wrote the date in 1970

I put a little peace sign in the zero.

I know how to duck and cover

if an air raid siren sounds.

I watched the original Star Trek

when it wasn't a re-run (and when it was).

I recall gas lines and the hope when solar collectors

went up on the White House.

I can still feel the fear of nuclear war

that Regan's insanity engendered

and the joy when the Berlin wall fell.
